What the floc?
What are those little snowflakes in my whisky?
Ever noticed a slight haze or tiny floating specks in your whisky? It might be flocculation - a natural process where compounds in the whisky, particularly fatty acids, esters and other flavour-carrying substances, come out of solution. These can appear as a cloudy haze, little flecks or even delicate, snowflake-like formations. It might not look familiar, but it isn't a sign that anything is wrong.
This is more likely to happen in whiskies bottled at cask strength, as they're generally less diluted and retain more of the natural compounds developed during distillation and maturation. Temperature can also play a part. Changes in temperature can affect how well these compounds stay dissolved, so in warmer climates, or when a bottle experiences temperature fluctuations, you may notice changes in its appearance. Flocculation is also associated with chill haze, which occurs when certain compounds become less soluble at lower temperatures.
The good news? These specks are harmless and don't mean your whisky has spoiled. In fact, they can be a sign that the whisky retains more of its natural character. So, don't let a few snowflakes put you off your dram!
